“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord, and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all your might. And these words which I command you this day shall be upon your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise” (Deut 6: 4-7). The Lord wants us all to live his law daily and thus teaching our children with the lives that we lead.
As I was growing up, the take away that I received from going to church is that it was something that we had to do at least three times a week, Sunday morning, evening, and Wednesday evening. If you went to church faithfully you in essence were obeying God. Gradually, I fell away from church. When I had my first child, I decided to come back to church, but I decided that I wanted to know why I was going to church, and what I believed. I remember what a revelation I had, when I read that Jesus said the most important commandment was to love the Lord God with all your heart. I was a little surprised that it didn’t involve baptism or church attendance.
Our children will see what we think is important by how we live our lives. I used to referee basketball and loved to watch, coach, and play the game. I encouraged all my children to play and took them to many games all over the country. Hence, they all love basketball. Have I taught them to love God as well?
